Hair Loss and Regrowth

Hair loss is a common condition

Hair loss is a common condition that can affect both men and women. As Chinese Medical Practitioners, we know that good blood flow is important for hair growth. We use techniques to stimulate circulation such as acupuncture and microneedling as well as supporting the blood internally with diet and herbal medicine. Stimulating the scalp brings blood and nutrients to the hair follicles, allowing for a healthy environment.

What are the pillars for hair loss management?

  • Identifying and addressing underlying causes
  • Nutritional support
  • Hormonal balance
  • Stress management
  • Scalp and hair care
  • Stimulating hair growth
  • Addressing any related health conditions

Scalp and Hair Care

When addressing hair loss it is important to consider environmental factors. Too often, products that we use specifically for treating hair loss can actually contain harmful chemicals. It is important to use natural based products and reduce exposure to chemicals that have been linked to hair loss. Make sure to check the labels!

Chemicals that can cause hair loss

  • Diethanolamine and triethonolamine (DEA and TEA)
  • Benzene
  • butylphenyl methylpropional (Lilial)
  • Formaldehyde (formalin, methanal, formic aldehyde)
  • Sulfates
  • Sodium Chloride
  • Parabens
  • Alcohols
  • Propylene Glycol
  • Silicone
  • Synthetic Fragrances
  • Synthetic Colors
  • Sodium Benzoate (only for some people)
Here is a list of some brands that have had or currently have lawsuits against them due to using harmful chemicals.
  • Johnson and Johnson, Procter and Gamble, Madison Reed, TREsemme, Olaplex, Unilever, L’Oreal, Dove, Bedhead, DevaCurl, Head and Shoulders, Aussie, Herbal Essences

Brands and products that are safe to use:

  • Mine Botanical
  • Sauce Beauty
  • Ouidad
  • Blue Poppy Chinese Herbal Shampoo
  • Sienna Naturals
  • DermaE
  • Prose
  • Ursa Major
  • Banyan Botanicals hair oil

Remember, an integrative approach to hair loss management involves not just treating the visible symptoms but addressing overall health, nutritional status, and potential internal imbalances for long-term improvement and prevention of further hair loss.

Recipe for Supporting Healthy Skin and Hair and to Reduce Stress

  • Small handful goji berries
  • 5-10 dried Longan fruit

Chop the apple and add all ingredients to about 32 oz of water, make sure water is covering all ingredients. Boil for 15-20 minutes. Strain and drink.

Another method is to add the ingredients to a hot water thermos and steep overnight. To buy the ingredients go to your local Asian market. In Seattle we have Uwajimaya, H Mart or Asian Family Market.
